The Nameless Women of the Ark

A story that intrigues me, because it seems to appear in slightly different forms in many cultures, is the story of Noah’s Ark. The women, Noah’ wife and her daughter-in-laws, are very present in the story but remain unnamed, in spite of the fact that lesser male characters are named.

This is part of a series of paintings of the Nameless Women of the Ark. I wanted to portray how difficult it might have been to take care of all of the animals and people on the ark and how the responsibility probably fell on the women's shoulders for the lion's share of the feeding and cleaning.

It is unimaginable that a young beautiful Jewish girl could become the Queen of what is in modern day, Iran. Anti Semitism is thousands of years old but it is important to remember there is always hope.

The pop icon Madonna is a vividly sexual rock star whose recent foray into motherhood has made big press, yet her name denotes the purest of pure. Perhaps the reality of the first Madonna lies somewhere between the blue virgin and the rock star, between the tangible and the ideal. The young Virgin Mary would have the same labour pains and the same sleepless nights as any mother.
